Pets are important members of our family. I know I get a ton of joy out of my crew of pet birds and two indoor cats.
But for senior and elderly people, pets can greatly improve quality of life.
-This is sad but true, getting older for a lot of people may also mean becoming more isolated and lonely. Friends and family move away or pass on. Aging issue make it is increasingly more difficult to leave the home or participate in once-loved activities. A pet in the house can greatly alleviate that sense of loneliness. Pets not only give us unconditional love, they also provide numerous health benefits.
You may already know this, but just the simple physical act of petting an animal can bring down stress and blood pressure. It’s hard not to smile or laugh when they do something cute or funny. Pets also give older folks something positive to focus on instead of on physical ailments. They can help ease depression and loneliness. And having a pet also encourages physical activity, whether it’s just playing with the cat, or taking the dog for a walk. A pet in the home just adds to overall feeling of well being.
-If you are considering adding a furry member to the house, we would encourage you to check out your local shelter. Sandra and I support the Seattle Animal Shelter, but there are others such as PAWS, and Seattle Area Feline Rescue. There are lots of pets of all ages looking for a home. Older pets at the shelter have a harder time getting adopted. So you may wanna think about opening up your heart and home to a pet that may be a little harder to adopt. The Seattle Animal Shelter has reduced fees for older pets. If you aren’t sure about long term commitment, you may want to consider fostering, or even volunteering at one of the shelters.
We would love to hear how a pet has added to your life.
Please think of us as a resource for all things real estate and downsizing.
